KSAMC says claims that persons are being charged to access shelters not true
The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is refuting claims that persons accessing shelters arising from Hurricane Melissa are being charged to access facilities across the Corporate Area.
"All emergency shelters operated by the KSAMC are free of cost and open to all members of the public who may be affected by the impending weather system," said the KSAMC in a media release on Monday.
The KSAMC says it is aware of false information circulating in the public domain alleging that individuals are being charged for admission into emergency shelters.
The local government authority says it categorically denies these claims.
Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, has strongly condemned the misinformation, describing it as "reckless and irresponsible, especially at a time when accurate information can make the difference between safety and harm."
"The KSAMC, in collaboration with shelter partners and other national agencies, remains focused on safeguarding lives, particularly among the homeless and those in flood-prone communities. We urge the public to rely solely on official channels for information and updates," said Swaby.
The KSAMC said it continues to coordinate the evacuation of vulnerable individuals across at-risk areas, while ensuring that shelters are adequately staffed and equipped.
